Best 4 OASE Aquarium Canister Filter With Built In Heater and UV

Filtration is essential in maintaining a healthy aquarium. A high-quality OASE aquarium canister filter with built in heater and UV can be like breathing fresh air and relaxation for your fish friends, therefore you’ll need the most effective canister filter available for the task.

To help you make a decision to make the right choice, I bought 3 external Oase canister filters with heater and UV at various prices from the same company and used them in my tanks for serval weeks.

This review will tell you the way I used them as well as what I enjoyed and disliked and also the best OASE canister filter for different types of aquarium setups.

Who Are Canister Filters Perfect For?

If you’re in need of an aquarium canister filter that has an integrated heater is contingent on the particular conditions of your aquarium.

If you’re running a modest 20-gallon (76-liter) tank with just a few guppies inside a canister filter is an absolute overkill, and you’d be better off using a hang-on-the-back as well as a sponge filter.

If you are planning to operate a 55-gallon (208-liter) tank that is heavily filled with African Cichlids, the canister filter will be an ideal fit.

Filters for canisters pump out lots of water and contain a huge amount of biomedia. This is the specific type of filter media that houses beneficial bacteria.

They’re best designed for aquariums with many fish.

The Oase Biomaster 600 is the biggest canister filter Oase provides. They boast a maximum flow rate of 1250 l/ph or 330 gph.

My tank measures 5 feet in length (143g) I thought it is best to have two tanks to ensure proper flow throughout the aquarium. This will let me clean the tank on an alternate schedule.

One canister will be serviced and the second one will continue to run in order not to take away so many beneficial bacteria. When the next time comes around, the second one will be cleaned, while the first will continue to run.

Stand-Out Features:

Pre-Filter

The most important feature that I’m a fan of that makes this filter stand out from the rest it’s the pre-filter that can be removed. You simply need to unlock the filter and then pull the prefilter out straight from its top.

Clean the sponges in the tank and then put those in your canister. This should enable you to extend the intervals between cleanings of the canister.

Integrated Heater

There is no need to purchase an additional in-line heater or even have one within the tank. This Oase Biomaster 600 “Thermo” includes the 300w heater. The OASE aquarium canister filter with built in heater and UV comes with its own cord for power which provides two advantages.

It’s also easy to change. It can also be “controlled” by a tank controller or a dedicated heater controller. If for some reason, the heater malfunctions and stays on the heater, it will be turned off via the controller.

Two reasons why I picked this filter. Along with good reviews, both for the filter and the customer support.

Roll-Out Shelf

The most appealing feature of this particular filter would be its pre-filter. It’s a problem that occurs when it’s placed in the stand it is too little space to straighten the filter upwards without falling into it against the wall of the unit.

So I picked up some heavy-duty drawer slides and cut an inch of 3/8″ birch plywood, and an inch of a clear acrylic sheet made to the exact length that the plywood.

Its sides were smoothed by sanding. The plywood was then painted using a flat spray of black.

The completed wood was joined to the slide drawers and then screwed onto the floor of the stand.

Then, the final clear acrylic piece was laid on top. This was to provide the wood with some protection from the elements to ensure that the filters don’t adhere to the wood surface.

Oase BioMaster Thermo 250 Canister Filter With Built-In Heater For Fish Tank

Installation

This Oase canister comes with a unique pre-filter. It’s essentially a tube of plastic with a pile of black sponges that are small and small like those that are used as pre-filters for hang-on-the-back filters.

They are designed to eliminate debris and algae prior to entering the main body of the canister. This is fantastic, however, these fine sponges may be very congested therefore make sure you keep them clean.

It also comes with an inbuilt heater, something that unlike the other canisters do. It’s a 200-watt glass heater that connects to the bottom of the motorhead.

The pre-filter and built-in heater can make it more difficult to get the filter set up however I believe it’s worthwhile.

The main body of the canister has four media baskets that stack. Three of them are made for sponges that can be reused and the fourth one is lined with a biomedia plastic that’s the bio ball as well as ceramic noodles.

Usually, I complain that filters do not have enough Mechanical media. But I believe this one is a bit too full. If I were to use this filter for a long time, I’d most likely remove some of the sponges, and then replace them with bio media.

Priming

I had a bit of trouble getting this filter primed the first time however I’m not sure whether it was simply an issue with the operator.

After I was able to set everything up, I clicked the button for priming at the top of my motorhead for around one minute however nothing occurred.

I took the motorhead off and played with it a little before putting it back into place. Then it was the moment I hit the button water began flowing into the canister.

The issue could have been that I did not have the motorhead correctly seated initially, or this filter is more difficult to fix than others. As I did experience an issue I thought it was appropriate to be aware of it.

The hoses will hold on to the siphon to keep it in place during maintenance, therefore priming following cleaning was easy. I simply reattached the hoses after which I unlocked them, and water began flowing into the canister quickly.

Maintenance

Cleaning this filter is relatively easy, however, it is important to be aware of the heating element.

The motorhead comes with a large handle that can be turned up at the top, which makes it much easier to transport this filter wherever you require it to drain. It can be a challenge to hold firmly onto an empty canister when you’re trying to move it around.

I would love it if each canister filter had the same handle as this!!

I particularly like the fact that it gives you stability when getting rid of the motorhead. The heater is built into the motor and the pre-filter rests on the motor’s underside it’s great to have a firm method of gripping the lid while taking the parts apart.

It was easy to dismantle the canister and wash the sponges using dechlorinated waters to remove the gunk build-up. Since there is a lot of mechanical media and bio media, the media didn’t contain much in any way, only some algae.

However, I have to cut some points off of maintenance, because you need to be extra careful when breaking the filter.

It is important to unplug the heater, and then let it rest for at least 15 minutes before taking off the motorhead. This will ensure that the heater is allowed to chill down. If you remove the heater from water while it is still hot can cause it to break.

In other canisters, you can simply disconnect the filter and then break it up should you wish. However, it’s not recommended to do that with the Oase Biomaster. It is best to wait until you are sure that the built-in heating unit has gone through a cooling process.

Noise

I measured an average of 44.76 decibels when I tested this filter. This makes it one of the quietest filters I’ve tested.

The next most quiet filter is the Fluval FX6, which is over three times as loud as this Oase.

If you pay attention at a close distance, you may detect a faint hum from the canister. It’s not really noticeable until you place your ear directly near the filter.

Temperature Control

I was really impressed with how well the heater built in could maintain the temperature of the tank.

While I was testing this filter I had my own 70-gallon (265-liter) mare trough to serve as a grow-out tank for angelfish in a school I have bred. Angelfish requires very warm water and I turned the heat up to 80degF (27degF).

The trough has been removed from my barn, and I was worried that the heater would not be able to adjust for huge temperature fluctuations, but I was surprised. The temperature in the tank was maintained at 80 degrees throughout the test period regardless of the fact that the temperature inside the barn fell to the 60s.

The Best For

This Oase filter is ideal for 40-50 gallon (151-208 liter) tanks.

I would suggest this to exotic nano fish tanks. The heater built in is safer for fish that are tiny and will help stop burns.

I’ve lost several fish to heat burns. A few fish might run behind the heater if they are scared. It takes only one second when they come into contact with the heated surface to cause serious injuries.

The filter can also be an excellent option for anyone trying to reduce the look of the equipment within their display tank.

There’s no need to see an electric heater that is attached to the side of the tank because it’s hidden within the canister.

I don’t suggest this filter for cold-water fish like goldfish. Fish such as these don’t require a heater, and therefore spending the money for filters that have an integrated heater could be an unnecessary expense.

Pros

  • Quietest filter tested
  • Built-in heater
  • Many mechanical filter media
  • Sturdy motorhead handle

Cons

  • There isn’t as much space for biomedia
  • The maintenance is a bit more complex

FAQs

Is There a Fish Tank Filter With a Heater?

Absolutely, Oase BioMaster Thermo 600 External Aquarium Canister Filter with Built-in Heating System.

Is an Aquarium Sump Better Than a Canister Filter?

Saltwater tanks are able to be operated with unintentionally added canister filters, however, anything more than 100 liters could require additional capacity for filtration. Saltwater aquariums require adequate water flow, as well as low levels of nutrients, and because of this, the sumps are usually considered to be the most suitable for this use.

Do I Need an Air Pump If I Have a Canister Filter For The Aquarium?

A pump is not necessary for this function, so the tank is maintained with sufficient water flow and surface agitation. This is usually the case when external (e.g. boxes, a box, or canister) filters are employed. In addition, air pumps may be employed to force water through a filtration device (e.g. sponge or the corner filter).

Are Oase Filters Any Good?

After trying the GPH After testing the GPH, I’d suggest this filter for 40 to 55-gallon aquariums. I was impressed by the built-in heater in this Oase filter. It’s a distinctive feature that none of its competitors have. I would highly recommend it to those with delicate or small aquarium fish.

How Often Should I Clean My Oase Filter?

BioSmart and BioTec have easy-pull cleaner handles. They compress foams that filter the water to clean it mechanically. Replace filters every 18-24 months.

What is An External Fish Filter?

External filters are able to provide filtration for the aquarium and are also outside the aquarium. They provide several benefits: they do not take up much room in aquariums, they can hold larger amounts of water than in-house filters, and they are less difficult to maintain and clean.

Are Oase Filters Quiet?

Oase has been in the Aquarium and Pond business for many years, and they have made small quantities of surface area filters into a stunning art shape! The filters are quiet and the water is filtered efficiently by a variety of shapes and sizes to provide any aquarium with an unobstructed water column.
